'Shaping the world's future' – University focus: Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam

Posted on 22nd Feb 2017 in University study, Netherlands

In September 2016 Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam started with a new study programme; Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). With a campus area specifically designed for PPE including seminar rooms and space to work together, the J.S. Mill College is a unique three-year Bachelor’s degree programme at VU Amsterdam. In fact, it is the first programme of its kind in continental Europe!

Throughout the year the programme organizes several masterclasses taught by prominent members of the philosophical, political and economic community. These masterclasses are open to staff and students and provide students with a chance to work and interact with each other. PPE combines a focused curriculum with exchange opportunities with international partner institutions and exciting extracurricular initiatives.

A PPE degree opens many doors for students. Whether they would like to continue their education, or move directly into a career in the business or political environment, or do something entirely different, PPE will equip students as leaders with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to address the emerging problems of the 21st century.

Carl Petter (Norway):

“People from this study are ambitious, but the atmosphere is not competitive at all. It is all about studying together and making progress together. People tend to think that this is a study that leads to a political career. This does not appeal to me. I am mostly interested in human rights. In ten years I will hopefully be working in this area.”

Katie Eitler (Luxembourg):

“The study is very demanding, but it is positively challenging. You have to be ambitious to catch up though. In the future I’d like to become a political advisor or a speech writer.”

Scholarships

New this year is the PPE Scholarships Programme that offers talented, prospective international students the unique opportunity to pursue a PPE bachelor’s degree at VU Amsterdam. PPE offers scholarships for EU and non-EU/EEA students for 2017/2018. Deadline for scholarship application is March 1th 2017. Awarding of the scholarships will be based on students’ contribution to diversity in the classroom, motivation, financial need, and merit as evidenced by their CV and transcripts.

About Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Ever since it was founded in 1880, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has been known for its distinctive approach to knowledge. Therefore, VU Amsterdam is an excellent choice if students are interested in completing a bachelor in PPE abroad. VU Amsterdam is a comprehensive research institution with a renowned reputation. Students will benefit from the personal atmosphere and easy access to university, while remaining close to the vibrant heart of Amsterdam.

In just over fifteen minutes you are in the lively historical centre of Amsterdam. It is virtually unique in having all the advantages of a big city – culture, history, good food, entertainment and extensive public transport – but with relatively few of the drawbacks. The city is small, there are plenty of quiet spots where you can kick back and relax and, thanks to its canals, it has relatively little traffic. Yet, it still has plenty to offer!
