Baltimore International Academy is committed to providing a rigorous academic learning environment that challenges all students to achieve. Our immersion (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French) and International Baccalaureate Programmes provide a culturally and linguistically diverse education to help our students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate responsibly in a changing world.
Who We Are
Baltimore International Academy (BIA) is a public charter school in an urban environment. We are located in Baltimore City, Maryland. We teach Kindergarten through Eighth Grades and have two signature programs, full Language Immersion and the International Baccalaureate. BIA offers a unique opportunity for Baltimore City children. Fluency in a second language will give them opportunities in their futures that their monolingual counterparts won't have. The international mindedness and critical thinking skills they gain by learning through the IB programmes is already setting them apart; their scores are higher than their City counterparts in the State's reading and math assessments. BIA's teachers are from numerous countries around the world, and our students enjoy a wide diversity of cultures and ethnicities as a result. This exposure gives them an open mindedness that is another advantage our students have over the majority of the City's other students who lack this exposure.
BIA follows the Maryland State Department of Education's curriculum, but with our full language immersion program, our students learn their core subjects (Science, Social Studies, Math, Target Language Arts) through one of five languages; Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), Arabic, Russian or French. Our students are City residents and 98% come to us only speaking English. From the time these children walk into the school, their teachers only speak to them in their target language, never in English. Our students become fluent in speaking, understanding, reading and writing in their target languages. Beginning in the second grade, students receive one hour of English language arts daily to learn the mechanics of their native tongue.
BIA is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes. As such, students learn through inquiry-based instruction, project-based assessments, and collaborative group work. They study in a way that increases their critical-thinking skills and prepares them well for high school, college, and a global marketplace. The school's environment, its Immersion and IB Programmes, are geared to our slogan, to provide "an international education for global leaders".
