District of Columbia International School (DCI) is an innovative middle and high public charter school in Washington, DC, with a mission of inspiring inquiring, engaged, knowledgeable, and caring secondary students who are multi-lingual, culturally competent, and committed to proactively creating a socially just and sustainable world. To realize this mission, DCI students participate in innovative activities in and out of the classroom on a daily basis. Students form their own lunch clubs; testify before the DC City Council; participate in art, poetry, and design contests; create over 100 self directed projects in Student Led Inquiry classes; and compete in seven sports through over two dozen teams.

DCI's three pillars of education are:

  • International Baccalaureate education for all: DCI offers the IB MYP for grades 6-10 and is a candidate school for the IB DP or CP for grades 11 and 12. There is no opt-in; all students will follow the IB tracks and work towards the IB diploma or Career Certificate.
  • Advanced language learning in Spanish, French, or Chinese: Students choose one of these as their primary language and some opt to study a secondary language as well. Languages are taught through inquiry-based, experiential learning and supplemented with international travel. Approximately 50% of students study Spanish, 30% study Chinese, and 20% study French.
  • Student agency through 1:1 technology: Students learn and study with the help of Chromebook computers and coursework that is interactive, personalized, inquiry based, and concept driven. The Chromebooks go home with students and night and over the summer, which has helped DCI to increase learning even when school is not in session.

DCI proudly serves a diverse group of DC public school students. With no majority race, the student body is approximately 40% Hispanic/Latino, 40% African American, and 20% Caucasian and Asian; over half qualify for free and reduced lunches and 15% receive Specialized Education Services. Currently, DCI serves 800 students in grades 6-10 and is growing by one grade level per year until it serves 1500 students in grades 6-12 by school year 2019-2020.
