The International School of Bologna was founded in 2004. The enrollment is currently 250 students. This enrollment size ensures that each student can receive individual attention and differentiated instruction, recognizing that not all students learn at the same pace: a key feature of the planning in an ISB classroom.

ISB offers an Early Years to university preparation educational programme in the medium of the English language that provides an education that develops international mindedness based on cultural understanding, our common humanity, human diversity, and shared values.

The curriculum is designed in conjunction with the International Baccalaureate (IB) and draws on the growing educational research worldwide informing effective teaching and learning. ISB incorporates the three IB programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students from 3 years old to 10 years old; the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students from 11 years old to 16 years old, and the Diploma Programme for 17 and 18 years old students. Successful completion of the Diploma is an outstanding preparation for university and research has shown that Diploma students report being excellently prepared for their studies and tend to find greater choice in their university admissions. The Diploma is accepted as an entrance qualification to university in many countries around the world, including Italy.

The IB curriculum offered by ISB has its own unique character which is influenced by the particular context of Bologna which itself has a rich educational heritage. The school is staffed by qualified and experienced teachers drawn from around the world. This international mix of faculty itself provides outstanding opportunities to draw on the best practices of national systems, including Italy. Apart from being part of the network of IB schools which spans the world, the quality of the programmes is further assured by an accreditation process through the Council of International Schools. Through this combination of the local and global we are preparing students not just to cope with a changing world, but to lead the change. To participate in the education programme at ISB is to aim high.
