Oporto British School is proud of the fact that it is the oldest British School in mainland Europe, having been established in 1894. Learning is at the core of everything we do. OBS students follow the Cambridge Curriculum until IGCSE. They then go on to study the IB Diploma Programme. Our Form 12 pupils have achieved outstanding IB Diploma results in recent years, which have been amongst the best in Portugal and consistently above the world average.

OBS supports bilingualism; Portuguese and English are offered as First Languages. The school is conscious of its British history, traditions and culture but also embraces internationalism by preparing our students for the changing world we live in, on local and global levels. The school culture is open and friendly; excellent relationships are evident throughout its close knit, supportive community, which is often described by visitors as feeling 'like one big family'.

In the Primary Section, the natural curiosity of our younger children is nurtured and stimulated in an environment that promotes exploration and develops independence through the EYFS curriculum. The areas of development include aspects of communication and language; expressive arts; design; literacy and personal, social and emotional development. In Forms 1-5, the curriculum provides a rich academic programme that encourages students to develop as confident learners. The core subjects use the Cambridge curriculum objectives.

The Secondary Section offers an academically challenging and enriching education for students aged 11 to 18. Students experience a broad, balanced range of academic subjects. Academic rigour is promoted throughout the school and our external examination results and university placements demonstrate a commitment to providing a successful and progressive environment.

There are three main stages of the Secondary Curriculum at OBS. Staff coordinate the transitions to ensure smooth progression between the stages. Forms 6-8 follow the Cambridge Secondary One Curriculum in the core subjects of Mathematics, English and Science. The curriculum helps prepare students for IGCSE and IB Diploma programmes. It also aims to develop our students as responsible and confident learners.

Forms 9 and 10 follow the Cambridge IGCSE Curriculum. This two-year programme culminates in external examinations at the end of Form 10. Our students are expected to have a positive and mature approach to learning at this stage as it is critical for success.

Form 11 and 12 follow the two-year IB Diploma Programme. Academic requirements and expectations are high; we also expect IBDP student to demonstrate a commitment to service and a willingness to involve themselves actively in the school. The school offers a wide range of disciplines within the six diploma subject areas. At the centre of the IB Diploma Programme is the development of the IB Learner profile.

The main features of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at OBS include:

  • High quality teaching occurs in classes with favourable teacher-pupil ratios. Class sizes throughout the IBDP are no more than 15. Our students make excellent progress and attain very good results.
  • Opportunities to progress to top universities around the world. The majority of our pupils go on to top universities in the UK, Portugal, USA and Europe. Pupils receive high quality advice and guidance and we receive representatives in school from a diverse range of universities throughout the IBDP. Many of our pupils go on to prestigious universities in the UK, Portugal and elsewhere.
  • Excellent co-curricular opportunities allow pupils to excel in the CAS programme. Students represent the school at Sports Festivals throughout Portugal, participate in Arts projects, participate in the Pupil Council and Model United Nations and lead fundraising initiatives throughout the school.
  • An overseas CAS outreach programme. This is the focus of most of the students for their long term project. For the past two years students have fundraised for and then worked in a local community in India.
