What You Should Know
Simply put, Shanghai American School (SAS) is the kind of school you wish you would've attended when you were a kid. Our challenging academic curriculum helps pave a path to some of the top universities around the world, and we offer over 150 activities, award-winning clubs and trophy-collecting sports teams. Our culture welcomes students from 46 countries, and our dedicated faculty have an average tenure of six years - 56 of whom have been with us over a decade. And as a nonprofit, independent school, all revenue goes right back into making the school even better by creating dynamic learning environments and university-level facilities.
We are China's largest (and one of Asia's most respected) international schools, with beautiful campuses in Puxi and Pudong. We are also Shanghai's most established international school, with a history that begins in 1912. Our mission at SAS is to inspire in all students a lifelong passion for learning; a commitment to act with integrity and compassion; and the courage to live their dreams.
Inside our Classrooms
At SAS, we offer students a strong academic program driven by the school’s mission and core values. From elementary school onward, SAS' balanced approach to teaching and learning helps students develop 21st century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication - all in a dynamic learning environment. This approach results in students who are confident, empowered, and globally aware citizens of the world.
Center for Inquiry & Design
Our soaring Center for Inquiry & Design in Puxi is a learning space unlike any other in Shanghai. The "CID" (as the students have named it) provides an interdisciplinary lab that combines science, chemistry and technology in one space; a maker space; and our Innovation Institute, which utilizes a project-based learning model, incorporating design thinking processes that empower students to address complex problems with no clear answers.
Early Childhood Center
The pride and joy of our Pudong campus is our Early Childhood Center. Here, every aspect has been designed to inspire young learners as they begin their educational journey. The teaching kitchen, the outdoor learning garden and collaborative learning spaces found throughout the center allows our teachers to bring the world to our students in unique ways.
Outside our Classrooms
At Shanghai American School, it's academics first. But not academics only. We believe a well-balanced, whole-person education is the best way to prepare our students for the future. To support this belief, we offer over 150 after school activities for students of all ages, from grade 1 through grade 12.
Our athletics offerings range from competitive to recreational and club level. High school students participate in the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) and Shanghai International Schools Activities Conferences (SISAC). In fact, in 2018, Shanghai American School student athletes earned the school's 100th APAC Championship, and have gone on to win 5 more since!
Our extensive arts programs include studio arts, drama, music, photography, and dance. Each campus features black box theaters and state-of-the-art performance centers with capacities of 650+. Our school calendar is packed with special events such as artists-in-residence, and photography trips to Iceland. And just last year, our film students dominated the student awards at the Shanghai Film Festival.
Beyond our Classrooms
"American" may be our middle name, but we are truly an international community. As such, much of the learning at SAS extends outside the classroom and into the region. Our students travel throughout Asia for a week during China Alive; they travel to Jindezhen to study the ancient craft of Chinese pottery in the place where it all began; they support schools in Africa; they live for a month in a village of Southwest China while continuing their studies; and they travel to Malaysia to study the health of coral. Their experiences outside the classroom walls encourages collaboration, problem solving and teamwork which will serve them well, long after they depart SAS.
At SAS, we believe the secret to a successful life isn’t a child's diploma - it's the child. That's why our counselors work closely with students throughout their time here, to assure each graduate finds a path that's right for them. Sure, some of our seniors head off to Ivy League schools. (At least nine acceptances per year since 2009.) But all find rewarding destinations. Some end up at the world's top design schools, or at the best liberal arts colleges, or at one of the ancient universities in the UK. Others ended up forgoing college altogether to start their own businesses, study French cuisine, or establish their own NGO. For our graduates, a whole world lies ahead. Which is why at SAS, we say "From here to anywhere."
