Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School, established in 1993, is one of the most prestigious schools in Shanghai, well regarded by parents. There are three departments, local, bilingual and a PYP Department authorized in December 2007. This school was the first local school on mainland China to be given IB World School status and continues to deliver programs in line with PYP standards and practices. SWFLPS is bilingual, offering students at least 50/50 Chinese and English. Competition to join PYP is high.
'Shanghai World Foreign Language School provides an education based on International principles and values such as responsibility, understanding and co-operation in the hope of encouraging "a world without frontiers"'.
Students in the school are served well with a foreign teacher and a Chinese bilingual teacher delivering a balanced, yet challenging program of inquiry. Collaboration between teachers is paramount and teams work towards providing the best learning opportunities for all students. A positive feature of the curriculum is the fusion of local and international content and practices. Developing positive values already embedded in Chinese culture, we celebrate and respect differences while encouraging our students to be active citizens.
The curriculum is rigorous, and all students also partake in specialist's subjects including Mandarin, Information Technology, Music/drama, PE, Library and Art. The facilities are modern and support our Global views. We believe in broadening our students interests and offer Student Clubs twice a week. There are a huge variety on offer including Table tennis, Chinese Kung Fu and cultural crafts. Self-defense, drawing and cooking with science, all enhance student learning. There is an increased emphasis on learning and maintaining cultural ties.
As a commitment to our community of learners we encourage students to follow their interests and develop a healthy regard of life outside the school. They are community minded, for example visiting the elderly to show their respect, and are aware of others and their needs.
They are also encouraged to participate on the International stage. Students partake in Robotics, sports and a variety of other events. The Choir visited Vienna in 2018 and were awarded Gold in their division. Students in The Odyssey of the Mind competition in 2018, gained third prize in the world final.
Our students develop into independent, confident and competent learners. They can and have taken on the World!!
