As a leading international school, boarding forms a vital part of life at SIS. Boarding is a great way for children to develop their social skills and interact with people from different cities, countries and cultures. Children say that the best thing about boarding is spending time with their friends and many make friends for life as they continue through SIS and beyond. Boarding is also an ideal way to make the most of all the opportunities on offer, particularly the extra curricular activities and training that take place early morning and after school. Weekly boarding is on offer to children who may wish to go home on weekends; however weekly boarders enjoy their boarding experience so much that they often opt to stay in school on weekends to enjoy the social activities on offer with their friends. Flexi-boarding for day boarders for two nights or more on an ad-hoc basis are also possible subject to bed availability.
Building Confidence and Empathy
Homeroom time in the morning is when students engage in general conversations with their teachers to discuss non-academic matters. Qualified and experienced counsellors intervene in and outside classes to develop a sense of belonging to the institution and adhering to the rules and regulations. Regular communications with the parents and students ensures a constant flow of ideas and opinions so that an atmosphere of open communication prevails.
Safety of Students
Entry to the school premises is only through an official electronic invitation and a registration confirmation. An official piece of identification needs to be submitted at the security gate prior to entry to the school premises. There are more than 225 CCTV cameras all over the campus including all classrooms so as to ensure students are in a safe environment. All floors have a security guard on duty 24 hours a day. The school buses are fitted with cameras and an electronic tracking system whereby parents and the school administrators can monitor en-route activities.
The Singapore National Educational Curriculum is known worldwide for its very strong Science and Maths expertise and along with the internationally acclaimed childhood pedagogy The Reggio Emilia Approach from Italy, are the essence of SIS's primary year program. This progresses into the IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programmes.
A different learning environment catering to the unique learning styles of children is provided for. It is drawn from best practices such as concept based learning and the inquiry approach where students become agents of learning, while teachers act more like facilitators to apply and evaluate knowledge rather than dispensing content in various disciplines.
Technologically Savvy Students
Technology is an integral part of the school life for both students and teachers. Every teacher is SIS is provided with a laptop upon joining the school. All classes are fitted with projectors while the campus is wifi enabled. Hence classrooms are connected to the internet for both students and teachers. SIS also offers the Cambridge Computer Studies course for Grade 10 and Computer Science course at the IB Diploma level. In the primary and middle years, students have computer/technology lessons in two dedicated Apple-enabled computer laboratories.
The school also subscribes to many electronic educational support portals that enhance the educational experience of learners. Key examples are: ManageBac that ensure a regular communication between teachers, students and parents. This portal enables teachers to post assignments, assign tasks while students can upload their work for teachers to mark. To inculcate values of academic honesty, a software called Turnitin is actively used in the school where students submit their work through this website and a similarity index is generated and students can then edit their work accordingly to give due credit to other peoples ideas if used in the work.
