Ghana is an industrialised, democratic West African country with a thriving international school sector centred on the capital Accra. Schools offering the curriculums of Britain, France, Germany, the United States and the International Baccalaureate Organisation serve the children of expatriate and local families.
Coeducational day schooling is the norm, but a small number of schools offer boarding. Some schools span kindergarten to senior secondary level, while others specialise in primary or secondary education, and many are Christian foundations.
There are 12 IB World Schools, of which eight are authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma, while three, Lincoln Community School, Al Rayan International School, and Tema International School, offer all three stages of the IB programme.
Ghana International School, which was founded in 1955, is the sector’s oldest institution. Today, it offers the English national curriculum, IGCSEs and A-levels to around 1,400 students of 47 nationalities.
Lincoln Community School, which dates back to 1966, blends IB programmes with an American-style education. It opened a new school building in May 2022. Vilac International School offers the English national curriculum alongside the Ghanaian one.
Accreditation bodies active in Ghana include the Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Education is compulsory from age four to 15 and state schools teach in English. Two years of kindergarten is followed by six years of primary school and three years of junior secondary education. A further three years of senior secondary school leads on to university.
