Ghana is an industrialised, democratic West African country with a thriving international school sector centred on the capital Accra. Schools offering the curriculums of Britain, France, Germany, the United States and the International Baccalaureate Organisation serve the children of expatriate and local families.
Coeducational day schooling is the norm, but a small number of schools offer boarding. Some schools span kindergarten to senior secondary level, while others specialise in primary or secondary education, and many are Christian foundations.
There are seven IB World Schools, of which two, Lincoln Community School and Al Rayan International School, offer all three stages of the IB programme.
Lincoln Community School, which dates back to 1966, blends IB programmes with an American-style education and is redeveloping its campus to provide the latest facilities.
Accreditation bodies active in Ghana include the Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Education is compulsory from age four to 15 and state schools teach in English. Two years of kindergarten is followed by six years of primary school and three years of junior secondary education. A further three years of senior secondary school leads on to university.
Children aged 14 and under account for 38 per cent of Ghana’s population and private schools outnumber state schools at primary and junior secondary level. Net enrolment is 73.5 per cent for kindergartens, 84 per cent at primary schools, and 58 per cent at secondary level.
