There are 65 IB World Schools in Indonesia. Of these, 45 offer the IB Diploma Programme. As with the country’s other international schools, practically all of them have English as their language of instruction, with others teaching in French or Dutch. Indonesia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. It has around 300 distinct ethnic groups speaking nearly 800 languages, six formally recognised religions and a centuries-old history of interaction with other countries through trading and colonialism.

Recent governmental changes to the regulation of education mean that Indonesian international schools are not actually allowed to have ‘international’ in their names. But there are many dozens of international schools in the country.  

Other results of the educational reform include the requirement for all teachers at international schools to have at least five years’ qualified experience, and the fact that all schools must teach Indonesian culture and language to foreign students. Otherwise, Indonesia’s international schools pretty universally follow an international curriculum, often based on British or American educational systems.
