The International School of Monaco (ISM) is the only IB World School in Monaco. It offers the Diploma Programme and the Career-related Programme, and is bilingual in English and French. The school is also accredited by the Council of International Schools.
The education system in Monaco is based on the French system. Aside from ISM, which is independent, schools run the French education programme slightly adapted for Monaco, such as compulsory classes in the Monégasque language.
School is obligatory for children from 6 to 16 years of age, with children able to attend nursery from the age of 3.
All state and private schools under contract are approved as French educational establishments abroad, and timetables and teaching programmes are administered by the French national education authority.
For examinations, Monaco comes under the remit of the Nice regional education authority. Some aspects of education are specific to Monaco, such as the teaching of English from the age of three, religious instruction subject to parental approval, the history of Monaco, and the native language.
