The School Of The Future, Today
Bavarian International School (BIS) in Munich and Haimhausen
Around 1,150 students from 61 nations attend Bavarian International School (BIS) in Munich-Schwabing and Haimhausen. The private all-day school offers children ages three years and up a personalised, holistic education under the motto "Believe. Inspire. Succeed". Intercultural competence, innovative learning and academic excellence characterise the spirit of BIS, which follows the globally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB). Thanks to its leading role in technology and conceptual thinking, BIS is able to offer a fantastic distance and hybrid learning programme during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We provide our students with the intellectual, social, emotional and above all critical perspectives they need as adults in a global, technological world. The pedagogical focus is always on the individual development and potential of each child - even at the Early Childhood stage from three years old, with preschool and elementary school," says Head of School Dr. Chrissie Sorenson. A key factor in the secret of BIS's success is the first-class trained, digitally affine and internationally experienced teachers (170 from 29 nations). At 35.8, the grade point average for the 2020 graduating class was again well above the global average of 29.9.
The Bavarian International School stands for state-of-the-art education with modern standards such as interactive whiteboards and Apple TV's, iPads (1:1 programme in grades 4-6), MacBooks (1:1 programme in grades 7-12), laboratories for science and technology, studios for creativity and art. Design and Educational Technology have been an integral part of the curriculum for many years. Internationality, cosmopolitanism and diversity are part of the DNA of BIS. In addition to English as the school's official language, German, French, Spanish and Mandarin as well as 17 other languages are taught in the home language program.
BIS gives particular importance to the caring and holistic view of developing a child, and offers learning and language support, as well as mental health counseling onsite at both campuses. An extensive extracurricular programme sees more than 400 students taking part in around 80 different interests and activities.
BIS is an IB World School authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). With almost 30 years of experience (founded in 1991), BIS is shaping the future of education. Students graduate with one of two IB Diploma degrees recognised by the best universities in Germany and the whole world.
A quick and effective response to a crisis
Within days after schools were forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bavarian International School was ready to open as a completely virtual school. Students were focused on learning from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a balance of online and offline activities, individual work and team work, tailored to each age group’s educational needs. Our teachers worked together quickly and efficiently to launch this distance and hybrid learning programme, which is now regionally recognized as one of the most successful executions of virtual learning during that lockdown and school closure. Parents were impressed to see students feeling engaged and looked after by their teachers, despite the virtual learning environment. This speaks to the care taken by BIS Teaching Faculty and Staff to integrate student wellbeing into the daily plans and programme.
An educational jewel in the heart of the city
Standing tall in one of Munich’s most famous neighborhoods, the BIS Primary School City Campus is an educational jewel in the heart of the city. Approximately 260 children from 34 nations pass through our City Campus doors everyday, into an environment of inquiry-based, positive and active learning. These are foundational elements of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which become tools students take with them into the next chapter of their educational career. At City Campus, we are developing curious learners, in a caring environment, where teachers take time to know their students and build relationships of trust. Our Primary School at City Campus is an all-day school where learning stops at 4:30 p.m. and after-school care and activities are available until 6:00 p.m.
