HIS was founded in 2002 by the International Schools Foundation as a non-profit, independent, day school. The current Chinese President, Xi Jinping, visited HIS to inaugurate the first international school in Hangzhou.

We are proudly accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and we are authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Primary Years Programme (PYP).

As an IB World School, Hangzhou International School provides a rigorous, high-caliber academic program for all ages of students.

These programs are recognized worldwide, and therefore, whether your next educational experience is back to your home country or to another international school, you can be assured of the 'portability' and acceptance of your child's achievements at HIS.

HIS students continue to score well above peer norms on NWEA MAP, PSAT and SAT standardized test measures while still having a "complete" learning experience within a rich and comprehensive extracurricular program.

Upper School student participation in IB coursework is 100% and final results have been truly exceptional. Graduates have earned the highest scores on the SATs and IB Diploma, and each year since 2004 many will attend top-50 universities around the world.

HIS celebrates the diversity of over 900 students from over 50 nationalities. A cornerstone of HIS learning is its commitment to international mindedness.

We pride ourselves on having an outstanding international faculty with experienced, IB-trained educators from around the world. We have over 100 expat teaching staff, most of whom come from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and South Africa.

We believe in the tremendous opportunity for learners to explore the culture of Hangzhou and other parts of China, to learn Mandarin at any level, and to participate within the local community and in partnership with local schools.

Admissions is open to all international applicants and we have a strong Student Support Services Team. We believe a truly international school serves and benefits by including as much of the international community as possible. At HIS, we don't ask if a student is good enough for HIS, instead, we ask if HIS is good enough for the student.

HIS has truly caring teachers, supportive parents, and involved students. From the time we first welcome our families, until the time their children cross our stage at graduation, we commit ourselves to supporting each student and their families. We devote significant attention and planning for community transition to HIS and from HIS. We are a place to thrive!

One hundred percent of the HIS faculty are highly qualified educators and IB-trained. Over 65% carry a Master's Degree or higher and were recruited from the best international recruitment associations in the world. Our teachers average over 13 years of teaching experience, and all love living in Hangzhou.

Classroom learning is fully "wired" at HIS. With a commitment to a 1-to-1 laptop initiative in grades 5–12, students use an Apple Macbook as one of their required educational resources and the entire campus provides wireless access for the HIS community.

Over the years, HIS has steadily augmented and upgraded its facilities and resources to match the growing student population, the requirements of a more robust high school program, and the demands of the future in education.

HIS also continues to compete successfully in regional sporting events, such as ACAMIS, HISAC, SISAC, CISSA and SSL sporting leagues, and even including the 'Dragon Cup' athletic exchange between all three SCIS and HIS sister schools in volleyball, football (soccer), swimming and basketball.

HIS hosts the regionally acclaimed West Lake Model UN conference each fall and continues to provide the city of Hangzhou with outstanding theater productions.

Overall, a hallmark of HIS has been our commitment to high standards of academic excellence as recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accrediting organization.

HIS is the only internationally accredited school in Hangzhou and fully commits to the process of schoolwide self-study and external evaluation of our on-going school improvement processes. The latest WASC accreditation letter recognizes 'stellar' aspects of our school and congratulates HIS for the high quality of instruction offered.

We are very proud of our educational program and the commitment of our entire community in creating such a supportive learning environment.

In 2022, HIS relocated to a new, purpose-built campus. Covering over 50,000 square meters, the HIS campus redefines education through open, shared, and multi-functional learning and leisure spaces. It is characterized by two buildings: The Cocoon (ECE Campus) and The Lantern (Main Campus).

A focus on curriculum and instruction as well as fine facilities and resources are, indeed, attributes of a good school. However, truly great educational institutions focus their efforts, time, and energy on our most treasured resource – people.

It is the people of Hangzhou International School that make it an outstanding school. Students, teachers, and parents are welcomed here, and know that their voice is heard and matters. HIS is a truly unique and truly international school.
