In May 2022, 43 students at Jerudong International School (JIS) sat for the IB Diploma examinations. There are presently 358 students following pre-university courses in this vibrant community where the student voice is actively nurtured.

Founded in 1997, JIS is located in South East Asia, in the small, country of Brunei, on the island of Borneo. A direct flight from major international and regional hubs such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan, it is easy to access, making it an ideal school of choice for parents seeking an outstanding school in a safe, secure environment.

JIS is an IB World School; a British School Overseas (BSO), an international HMC School and recognised by the prestigious Good Schools Guide. A leading member of the Federation of British Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), Council of British International Schools (COBIS).

In January 2019, Jerudong International School, an IB World School, became the first international school in the world to achieve the highest rating in all nine areas inspected by the British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspectorate including Boarding.

The school is a thriving community with 1650 students from 55 countries (45% Bruneian), 3-18 years in age. 220 Boarders form a close community in bespoke accommodation, on campus. The School aims are: Communication, Engagement, Integration, Leadership, Resilience and Thinking. Students are encouraged to Challenge Yourself, Respect Others and Inspire Change.

The IB Diploma Programme at JIS

The 100 IBDP Students study in small classes (5-15 students) with up to 21 subjects on offer across the six IB Group areas. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is taught in lectures, small group discussions and supplemented by lunchtime lectures from outside speakers, staff and students. The IBDP programme at JIS is a student centred programme designed to enable students to be actively engaged in academic subjects but also thoroughly grounded in world events so they can really make a difference.

Outstanding IB Diploma Results

In 2022, JIS IB students' average score was 35.4. The World Average IB Score was 32; 71% of JIS students exceeded the world average. The highest score achieved was 44 points. 40% of the JIS IB Diploma students achieved 38 points or more. These results are consistent and build upon the results of the past 11 years of offering the IB Diploma programme.

University Destinations

A specialist team of Higher Education advisors guide and prepare students for SATS, IELTS and University applications. 2022 graduate destinations include the UK - the University of Cambridge, Durham University, University of Manchester, Sheffield University, University College London. CANADA - University of Toronto, University of British Columbia. AUSTRALIA - Monash University, Melbourne. GERMANY - Ludwig Maximilians University. NETHERLANDS - Erasmus University. SINGAPORE - Nanyang Technology University. IB Diploma students also received a number of Scholarships.

Teaching Staff

JIS has almost 200 highly qualified teachers primarily from the UK but also a small number from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. Our language teachers are native language speakers from China, France and Brunei. The IBDP is staffed by experienced academic teachers.

Pastoral Care

All students and teachers in the School are members of a House (a community of about 70 students) which plays a vital role in establishing and maintaining a strong school spirit and enabling leadership opportunities. The 16 Houses in Senior School, provide leadership, mentoring and teamwork opportunities. Weekly House sports competitions and other House Events including House Debates, House Music, JIS has Talent and Spelling Bees in addition to House social events are highlights.

The Campus

The 120 acre single campus is 'Outstanding'. The purpose-built, fully WiFi and networked school facility is located near the coast - a 15 minute drive from the airport. Students can use the Arts Centre (725 seat theatre, dance studio, black box theatre and rehearsal rooms), 27 science laboratories, extensive music faculty, art, design and technology and textile studios, libraries and traditional classrooms as well as the 2 swimming pools (50m and 25m), Extensive sports facilities include 3 large air-conditioned Sports Halls, netball/basketball and tennis courts and 3 soccer/rugby pitches. A Raquet Sports facility for squash and tennis and a well resourced library. A medical centre in the school and boarding is on site to take care of students. An award winning Outdoor Discovery Centre - an eco-forestry initiative on tropical heathland on the campus is regularly used for activities and also as an Outdoor Classroom learning space.

Boarding facilities

The 'outstanding' Boarding facilities for students aged 10 years + are purpose designed and built for the community of boarders. 217 girls and boys presently enjoy separate Boarding Houses cared for by experienced staff, including a Junior House. The Boarding Housemaster or Housemistresses are all teachers in the School. Boarders can also use the school facilities. A programme of weekend activities is arranged for the boarders to fully embrace the wonderful environment of Brunei.

Co-curricular Programme

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) builds on an extensive co-curricular programme with over 300 activities including a mature International Award programme, Model United Nations (MUN), ECO JIS, Diving, Sports and Performing Arts programmes.
