About

Maryland International School (MDIS) is an independent, private school in Howard County, Maryland, conveniently located in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. MDIS is the first school in the state of Maryland, and the second in the mid-Atlantic region, to offer three International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes: Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP).

Our beautiful 9 acre campus serves students from grades 1-12. Our mission and vision is to provide an academically rigorous and supportive college-preparatory education with an interdisciplinary and applied focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines in order to prepare students to become creative problem solvers, effective communicators, and tomorrow's leaders who think ethically, independently, and globally.

IB & STEM

Our curriculum integrates the International Baccalaureate curriculum with STEM specific programs and pathways. Our STEM-integrated curriculum was developed taking into account the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), technology standards, disciplinary literacy standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and transdisciplinary core content lessons. Our curriculum is designed to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation in order to develop the academic, emotional and social skills that students will need to live and work in a globalized world. Our after school STEM programs include, but are not limited to: Robotics Club, Science Olympiad, FIRST Lego League, Coding Club, and a Drone Club.

Signature Programs & Events

MDIS highlights the IB philosophy of building international-mindedness through our Global Ambassadors Program (GAP), Mother Language Day, and Celebration of Nations. GAP, our study abroad immersion program with a service-learning component builds leadership beyond the classroom. It includes an international student program bringing students together from around the world to study at MDIS. We celebrate the cultures, languages, and traditions of countries around the world with our Celebration of Nations and our Mother Language day. These events showcase the diversity of our students by giving them a day to share their experiences, teach their language and to build connections through the use of the 10 learner profiles.

Admissions

Our admissions process operates on a rolling basis and so we welcome student applications year-round. When considering an applicant, we recognize that every child is unique. We evaluate a student’s overall academic and developmental readiness and whether they will thrive in, and benefit from, the academic challenges of our curriculum. For additional information, please reach out by phone or email to learn more about the MDIS admission process.
