Maryland International School (MDIS) is an independent, private school in Howard County, Maryland, conveniently located in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. MDIS is the first school in the state of Maryland, and the second in the mid-Atlantic region, to offer three International Baccalaureate (IB) programs: Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP).
Our beautiful 9 acre campus serves students from grades 1-12. Our mission and vision is to provide an academically rigorous and supportive college-preparatory education with an interdisciplinary and applied focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines in order to prepare students to become creative problem solvers, effective communicators, and tomorrow's leaders who think ethically, independently, and globally.
IB & STEM
Our curriculum integrates the International Baccalaureate curriculum with STEM specific programs and pathways. Our STEM-integrated curriculum was developed taking into account the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), technology standards, disciplinary literacy standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and transdisciplinary core content lessons. Our curriculum is designed to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation in order to develop the academic, emotional and social skills that students will need to live and work in a globalized world. Our after school STEM programs include, but are not limited to: Robotics Club, Science Olympiad, FIRST Lego League, Coding Club, and a Drone Club.
MDIS offers two signature programs: Global Studies Program and Global Ambassadors Program (GAP). We have designed a unique program of activities, experiences, and study abroad trips to help students thrive as leaders in a globalized world. Students gain intercultural skills and global perspectives through hands-on and experiential learning, language immersion, cross-cultural exchange, and collaborative service projects and service learning. Highlights of the Global Studies Program include the National Geographic GeoBee, Model UN, Harvard Model Congress, and IB School Exchange. The Global Ambassadors Program offers a signature experience for our upper school students in different locations around the world each year through our partnerships with WorldStrides, an accredited travel organization.
Our admissions process operates on a rolling basis and so we welcome student applications year-round. When considering an applicant, we recognize that every child is unique. We evaluate a student’s overall academic and developmental readiness and whether they will thrive in, and benefit from, the academic challenges of our curriculum. For additional information, please reach out by phone or email to learn more about the MDIS admission process.
