Developing Change Leaders Through Action and Discipline

Nagano Nihon University Schools (Nagano Nichidai) is a distinguished institution in Japan dedicated to nurturing "Mirai (Future) Change Leaders." Our educational philosophy goes beyond academic achievement, focusing on the holistic development of students who possess the critical thinking, ethical grounding, and drive to make a positive impact in the global community.

Core Educational Philosophy: Human Development and Leadership

The core mission of Nagano Nichidai is built on the belief that human development precedes academic success ("Gakuryoku no Kojo wa hitozukuri kara" – "Improvement of academic ability starts with the development of character").

We aim to instill four key qualities in every student:

  • Compassion – empathy and ethical reasoning.
  • Independence – self-reliance and the ability to set and pursue personal goals.
  • Social Responsibility – collaboration and meaningful contribution to society.
  • Curiosity and Lifelong Learning – a desire for continuous inquiry and growth.

This philosophy is reinforced by our adoption of the full International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, which serves as a foundation for rigorous, inquiry-based learning to create balanced individuals prepared for complex, real-world challenges.

The Power of Club Activities: Bunbu-Ryodo

Nagano Nichidai strongly champions the concept of "Bunbu-Ryodo" ("Study and Club activities"), advocating for the simultaneous pursuit of academic excellence and success in extracurricular activities. This is seen as essential for character formation.

  • High Participation: The school boasts a high club participation rate, with nearly 80% of students involved in one of the school's many athletic or cultural clubs.
  • Emphasis on Character: Every club activity, from the baseball team (which has experienced success at the Koshien National Tournament) to the award-winning cultural groups, is centered on human formation and teaching life skills like teamwork, discipline, resilience, and emotional intelligence.
  • Multi-Age Mentorship: Many clubs combine junior high and high school students in practice, fostering a unique mentorship culture where older students take on leadership roles and help uplift the overall skill and spirit of the younger members.

Action and Leadership in the School

Our school structure is designed to empower students to take action and lead. Students are not passive recipients of education; they are active agents of change within the school community. The IB's emphasis on "Action and Service" is deeply integrated into daily life, encouraging students to identify issues and propose solutions.

Through various projects and school governance roles, students develop:

  • Collaboration and Initiative: Working together on interdisciplinary projects to solve problems.
  • Ethical Awareness: Applying classroom knowledge to real-world contexts and developing a strong sense of ethical responsibility toward the community.
  • Independent Thinking: The high-level research and critical analysis skills developed in our academic programs directly translate into effective and responsible leadership within the school and beyond.

At Nagano Nihon University Schools, we believe that education must prepare students not just to enter the world, but to lead and transform it.
