Founded in 1955, Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington DC, is a vibrant and inclusive international community welcoming students from over 80 different nationalities. Located on two beautiful campuses in Bethesda, Maryland, Rochambeau offers a caring environment where students become confident, multilingual, and open-minded critical thinkers prepared to thrive in a global world.
Students can begin their journey at age 2, developing fluency in both French and English. The maternelle (preschool) program, often described as the "crown jewel of the French school system", emphasizes play, creativity, language, and learning to live together. French beginners are welcomed through Grade 1 thanks to a specially designed immersion program.
As students progress, they benefit from a rigorous and well-rounded curriculum focused on critical thinking. Rochambeau offers both the French Baccalauréat and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, two globally recognized pathways that develop academic excellence and intercultural understanding. Starting in Grade 9, students may continue in the French track or transition to the IB track. This gives our students the distinct advantage to select a diploma program that best suits their learning styles and goals.
Rochambeau is one of only three schools in North America authorized to offer the IB Advanced Bilingual Diploma. Moreover, students may also earn a U.S. High School Diploma.
Learning at Rochambeau extends far beyond the classroom. Students benefit from enriching field trips, cultural exchanges, and a wide range of extracurricular opportunities that encourage curiosity, creativity, and leadership. From Model UN and theater productions to robotics, soccer, volleyball, and rock climbing, every student can explore their interests and develop new skills. Dedicated student support services, including academic guidance, counseling, and university advising, help each learner reach their full potential and prepare for their next steps with confidence.
Language learning is central to the Rochambeau experience. In addition to French and English, students can study Spanish, German, Arabic, or Latin starting as early as Grade 4, deepening their cultural awareness and communication skills in a truly multilingual environment.
Rochambeau graduates go on to attend leading universities in the United States and around the world, pursuing studies across a wide range of disciplines.
Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, Rochambeau proudly continues its missions of excellence as part of the AEFE Network of French Schools Abroad and the Mission Laïque Française, and is accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
