Vientiane International School (VIS) is an independent, non-profit, authorized IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years (PYP), Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma (DP) Programmes from Early Years through Grade 12. The school received initial accreditation in 2001 from both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS) and was re-accredited in December 2011. Vientiane International School is the only school in Lao PDR to receive accreditation from international accreditation agencies.

Our missions is to challenge, inspire and empower students to develop their unique potential and to be responsible citizens in a changing world.

We value

  • creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and resilience
  • academic excellence in a conceptually based inquiry driven curriculum
  • international mindedness as engagement with global and local cultures and concerns
  • intellectual, physical and emotional balance
  • positive relationships built on empathy, respect and collaboration
  • a healthy, safe and welcoming environment

The school has a strong ethos of Community, Action and Service and has made many connections in the Lao community that have developed the cultural understanding and global awareness of our students and the school community as a whole. Strong connections have been made through the relationships and partnerships that students have developed through supporting our Lao sister school and through Secondary Action Learning Service Adventure (SALSA) trips.

VIS students come from diverse backgrounds with over 46 different nationalities represented within the student body. A large percentage of the parents are professionals from embassies, NGO's and international companies. Our student body has a transient rate of approximately 20% each year and our curriculum ensures students successfully transition to their next international school or English-medium school in their home country. Our Diploma students are likewise well prepared for acceptance into a college or university with the majority of students attending a quality university upon graduation.

VIS also offers an extensive co-curricular programme where students can engage in a wide variety of activities after school and at the weekends. The school is part of the regional association, Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA), which enables our students and those from neighbouring countries to regularly take part in sporting and cultural exchanges.
