Luanda International School Class of 2026 Makes History with Two Valedictorians

Luanda International School proudly celebrated the Class of 2026 as 27 students completed their Diploma Programme journey and received their High School Diplomas. Surrounded by families, friends, staff, and special guests, including His Excellency the Ambassador of South Africa, Mr Christiaan Kriek, the graduates came together to mark an important transition from their years at LIS to the opportunities that await them beyond the school.

The ceremony began with the procession of graduates, followed by welcome remarks from former Secondary School Principal Mr Jonah Rosenfield. Susana Pinheiro, IB Diploma Programme Coordinator, then addressed the graduating class with a symbolic gesture. Each student received a piece of cloth featuring a different African pattern, representing the individuality of each graduate and the unique experiences, qualities, and perspectives they bring to the wider community. Like the distinct patterns within each cloth, every student has developed their own identity while remaining part of a shared whole.

A digital scrapbook then revisited significant moments from the students' years at LIS, bringing together memories from their time at the school. The celebration continued with reflections on service, as students shared remarks about their involvement in community initiatives and the learning that came from contributing beyond the classroom. Students also offered farewell remarks to LIS, reflecting on the relationships, experiences, and lessons that have shaped their journey.

Academic achievement was another defining part of the celebration. The Class of 2026 made LIS history with two Valedictorians, recognising the outstanding achievements of the cohort. Director Ms Bridget Davies introduced the Valedictorians, who then shared their remarks with their classmates and the wider community, reflecting on their experiences and the significance of reaching this milestone together.

The presentation of diplomas was followed by the candle ceremony, providing a symbolic moment of transition as students completed their secondary studies. In her closing remarks, Ms Davies congratulated them and, through the switching of their tassels, marked their transition from students to graduates.

The evening concluded with a celebration attended by the school’s community, where graduates, families, friends, and staff gathered to continue the festivities. The traditional cap toss brought the ceremony to a joyful close, celebrating not only the achievements of the Class of 2026, but also the beginning of their next chapter.

As they move on to universities and new opportunities around the world, the graduates carry with them the academic knowledge, skills, relationships, and experiences developed throughout their education at LIS.
