Argentina’s drive to establish free, universal, compulsory, secular education began in 1884 and today it has the most highly educated population in Latin America. Public education is free from primary school to university and gross tertiary enrolment stands at 83 per cent.
Among 58 IB World Schools in Argentina, three teach in Spanish and English, the remainder are English-medium and 42 are Spanish-medium. All but one are authorised to offer the IB Diploma, while a three-stage IB programme is offered by one school: St George’s College North, which teaches in English.
Many schools offer bilingual, dual-curriculum programmes that cater both to expatriates and Argentina’s melting pot of immigrant communities. Northlands School, which is bilingual in Spanish and English, combines the IB Diploma with British IGCSEs and the Argentine curriculum.
Education is compulsory for 12 years from age five to 17. In the Spanish-medium state system, the primary and secondary stages both last six years and are divided into two cycles. At upper secondary level, students specialise in areas such as social sciences, arts and natural sciences. Public education is also free to foreign nationals. The school year starts in early March and finishes in mid-December.
